Whitby
Whitby Psychiatric Hospital
Gordon St
Built: 1919
Haunted: unknown

History
Originally built in 1919, with a capacity of about 1500 patients, the hospital encompassed 16 cottages plus various support buildings, with a network of tunnels connecting them. After WWII, it was used as a convalescent home and treatment centre for shell-shocked veterans.

In March of 1933, a patient at the hosptial strangled one of the guards to death.

Due to age, and an asbestos problem, the hospital was replaced by a new building in the early 1990s.

Currently, much of the old site is slated for demolition, although some buildings will be retained as historical sites.

Eyewitness Account
"In high school a few friends on mine and I went there. We went a total of 2 times, then were too scared to go back. Here is some of what happened to us!!

First visit - We had 2 cars with us, 7 people in total. We parked in the back of the main building. We got out of the cars, and walked around to the front entrance of the main building. We were on the front steps when a couple guys with video cameras came running out telling us that they were leaving, it was too freaky in there for them. They took of running, and we didn't see them again.

We went in the doors, and up the stairs into what I guess is the main foyer area. We stood there to get our bearings for a bit, then headed left down the hall. Some of the patient rooms were locked, but a few were open and in one of them you could hear like a clanging noise. Then, a garbage cans lid started spinning around all by itself, it was bizarre. We went down into a spooky old tunnel with mold on the walls, and then this room with body drawers . . . I wouldn't even go IN that room, it was so spooky . . . We left that room and headed up and down the hall into a large open room, and were barely in the door when we started hearing crying . . . we all had flashlights so we shone them all over the room, and it was TOTALLY empty. Then a window beside us blew up and showered us with glass and the crying turned into laughing. We ran out of the room . . . went upstairs. Lots of noise that we didnt see anything causing the noise . . . then sounded like someone was following us, we got scared and ran out to our cars and left.

Second visit - We didn't go into the main building, but we checked out the kids ward there. Some of the rooms still had kid handprints on the walls, small beds, lots of noise here, like running and banging noises. It was kind of spooky seeing KIDS quarters. I had this overwhelming snese of sadness in one of the rooms, and started to cry and sat on the floor . . . just sat and couldn't stop crying . . . my friends got freaked out and pulled me out of the room whereI immediately felt better . . . . Went into a different building. This one had what we guessed to be like a processing room of some sort - had a large conveyor belt against the right wall. We went into the room and heard crying and moaning in the far left corner. We tried our flashlights, but they had died - thank goodness there were windows and a full moon. And out lights had died the SECOND we stepped into the building. All 4 of them just died on us. Anyways, we heard the sobbing and crying and moaning, sounded like a woman in distress. I stepped forward and said "Hello, hello? Anybody there?"

Then all hell broke loose around us. We heard the woman (we think a woman) come running across the room towards us, and all around her footfalls we heard screaming and glass breaking, but we couldnt FIND any glass that had broken! We stood there for a full minute just too scared to move . . . then it felt like someone pushed through the group of us and ran out the door screaming, it sounded SO close to us, and some of us were physically PUSHED out of the way . . . then, in a bathroom on the side of the room to our left, the toilet flushed and we heard more glass breaking, and then saw a bookshelf of glass jars full of gross looking substances - we don't know WHAT was in them, we didn't check . . . then suddenly a few of the bottles smashed on the floor and one flew through the air and hit the wall beside the door and we all took off screaming . . . all of this happened in maybe 40 seconds . . . we ran out the door and got into our cars, and one of the cars wouldn't start . . . finally it started and we got the hell out of there... and vowed never to go back."

"The first time I went there was the weirdest. Nothing electrical worked properly. As we arrived, the headlights of the car our small group was in stopped working. Then I realized my mag lite had quit, even though I just spent 8 dollars on batteries. My brother's flashlight also decided it didnt want to go in. We only went into one building (#14) and I had such an awful feeling after seeing the first floor bathroom that I had to jet."

"I have visited the old whitby psychiatric hospital on many ocasions. All the remaining buildings are very quiet (aside from the tunnels - if you listen in the entrance to them at the gym, you can hear moaning and other odd sounds - I wanted to go down but I was told its flooded).

Havent seen anything remotely ghostly, except in the old main administration building (the one you first see). I went in there not long ago. We heard loud banging in the stairwell and when we had walked just about 2 feet out of the coridoor, something threw glass against the wall. I didn't see it, but I heard the glass smash, then fall to the floor. I peeeked in from where we had just came from and there was nothing. No other people where in that biulding at the time. I'm too freaked out to even go back in that one."

My ex bf was submitted to the hospital in the erly 90s when it was still functioning. He wasn't in the building with the steel elevator, but he said it would always make weird noises, even if no one was on it, and it would go up and down from time to time without anyone pushing a button. I was talking with a group of younger teens around 14, 15 maybe 16 and they said they went in one night to look around and when they walked by the elevator the 2 flashlighs went off simultaneously."

"Although I warm when I was in Toronto but as soon as we parked by the side enterance with sign on "No trespassing" All the sudden I felt a cool breeze coming from nowhere so I grabbed my jacket. We parked two cars around the enterance and my bf's friend's car light all the sudden started to flash and died out. He said it's not the first time it happened, and I didn't think anything of it. We started to head to cottege area.

We didn't see anyone in the hospital and everytime when we though we heard any type of noise, we have stopped moving and just absorbed what was happening around us. I guess my bf's friend were much familier with the area because the guys knew exactly which building he can go inside and which one was completely closed. I walked in the building between two guys because I've started to feel this wierd sensation as someone was pulling my hair, but nobody was around except my bf and my friend.

We walk inside of the hallway and there were broken glasses and broken woods everywhere. stairs are so unstable I was always holding on to someone as I walk into pitch black hallway and stairs. when we were half way up the stairs, I hear something dropped from the upstairs. Then i heard rolling down sound. "Oh shit!" My friend said quietly. It was beaten up paint bucket rolled down the stairs although there were no body upstair. Then we run out of the building with fear and run back to the car as soon as possible."
