Ojibway Hotel
North Shore Rd.
Built: 1906
Haunted: unknown
History
The hotel was originally built atop the highest point of Ojibway Island's 14 acres of land.
It catered to rail and steamboat tourists looking summer holiday resorts that contained the best of the wilderness, without the inconveniences of camping.
In the period between WWI and WWII, the hotel housed 100 guests a night in everything from tents, to cottages, to hotel suites.
During the 1920s, a young American chambermaid was living in the East Wing. She believed her boyfriend was cheating on her so she followed him to the Tower Room, where she found him with another woman. The next day she returned with a chair and a rope, turned to face the setting sun, kicked the chair away, and hanged herself.
In 1942, the owner sold the hotel to the Pointe au Baril Islanders’ Association, who continued operating it as a hotel until the 1960s. At that time, cottages were sold off and the rest of the property
tunred into a non-profit club.
Hauntings
The apparition of a 30-ish, white-veiled woman with shoulder length hair, has often been seen, usually in the 3rd floor Tower Room or the East Wing.
The sounds of moaning and cries are commonly heard coming from from the third floor.
During a 1995 storm that knocked out power for the area, there was still a light shining in the Tower Room.
