MacKenzie Inn and Gatehouse Restaurant
1011 Portage Road
Built: 1888
Haunted: unknown
History
Originally built in 1888, the Inn served as home to Sir William Mackenzie, co-founder of the Canadian Northern Railway.
Upon his death in 1923, it was converted to a convent and boarding school. By the time the 1970s rolled around, the Inn had fallen into disrepair and became the subject of several partial resorations.
A full restoration occurred in the early 1990s, at which time the Inn opened for business.
The old gatehouse, an ivy covered building that housed Mackenzie's chauffeur, was used as a classroom during the convent years. It now houses the Gatehouse Restaurant.
Eyewitness Account
"My youngest daughter was working in the kitchen in the inn with another girl late at night after a function.
While they were cleaning up, a water jug that was on a counter flew about 15 feet across the room and smashed into the wall.
They were the only two people in the kitchen. They both swear that they did not throw the jug.
They also said that the heavy kitchen door often closes on its own even if it is propped open.
She has had numerous problems with computers and other electrical devices while she has been living there.
Lights in the house go on and off for no reason. The telephone answering machine also turns on and off by itself.
My daughters have said they have gotten in trouble from their mother for erasing the answering machine when they have
not touched it at all.
She says that she has heard footsteps on the second floor of the Gatehouse restaurant when no one is on that floor.
She says that she has an eerie feeling that she is not alone at certain times while she is working by herself
in the Gatehouse. She does not go there alone anymore.
My oldest daughter's boyfriend says that he saw the ghost of a little girl in one of the basement corridors.
He was in the basement around 10 pm by himself cleaning out a room. He said he heard a noise and went into the hallway.
He said he saw a little girl run from one room to the next. He immediately got out of there.
He told me that there is a legend that a little girl was drowned in a bathtub in the inn's basement by her
parents at the turn of the century. We were both standing at the back of the building when he told me this story.
As soon as he finished the story, my car that was parked on an icy incline at the back moved about 12" with no one
near the car. The car was parked on the same incline for 15 minutes prior and did not move at all.
I have seen a light at the back of the building on the outside that goes on and off continuallyfor no reason."
