The Customs House
51 Stuart St.
Built: 1860
Haunted: 1873
|
|
History
Built in 1860, this stone building originally served as the Customs House until 1887.
From 1887 to 1893, the building housed a temporary elementary school and a branch of the YMCA.
A homeless shelter occupied the building in the early 1900s, after which it stood empty and derelict until a fire destroyed the vinegar factory next door. The owner bought the Customs House and moved
his factory there.
Over the next 65 years, several factories moved in and out of the building, adding a third floor in the late 1920s after a fire destroyed the roof. The factory days ended in 1979 when the Naples Macaroni Company was shut down by the Health Department.
The building reopened again in 1988 to house a martial arts academy, then a computer company, and finally the Ontario Workers Arts and Heritage Centre, which occupies it today.
Hauntings
Both staff and visitors to the Customs House have reported the apparition of a beautiful woman in the top-floor window, which may
be the same person as the woman dressed all in black.
The sound of a deep male voice has been heard, and a papertowel dispenser was thrown from men's bathroom wall.
The apparition of a cat was once seen caught between a storm window and inside window, which had been nailed shut for months.
Other windows have been found open just minutes after being locked shut.
During rennovations, workers found their tools found scattered about in the morning, and once found the, stacked in a precarious ceiling-high pile.
The apparition of a woman in her mid 80s, about 1.7m high, dressed all in black was seen, and the word 'murder' became mysteriously visible on a wall in the northeastern room of the main floor.

Private Home
Barton St.
Built: unknown
Haunted: unknown
History
Not much is known about the old brick house, except for the fact that the wife of a previous owner died in the bedroom where the incidents occurred.
Hauntings
Residents of the home have reported three separate apparitions:
a man who enters the bedroom, grabs the bedpost, and shakes the bed;
a shadowy figure at foot of bed;
and a glowing figure at the top of the stairs that dissolves like vapour.
The sound of a howling dog can be heard in the bedroom, usually in the early morning, and often accompanied by a feeling of bitter cold.
The feeling of a presence has also been reported, along with a physical indentation of someone laying in the bed.
Again, this is usually accompanied by bitterly cold drafts.
Finally, the sound of knocking can be heard from inside the bedroom closet.

Private Home
Brucedale Ave.
Built: unknown
Haunted: 1950s
History
In the early half of the 20th century, the home was owned by a newlywed couple. For them, love may have been true, but life was anything but peaceful.
Neighbours report that they fought day and night, a conflict that finally ended with the wife falling (or, some say, being pushed) down the cellar stairs to her death.
Despite its excellent condition and (one would think) resale value, the house had to be demolished in the late 1960s because every new owner reported the same experience.
Hauntings
Whether she fell, or was pushed, the bride's resting place is anything but a peaceful one. For nearly 20 years, every owner of the home reported the sounds of a woman's screams coming from the cellar.

Private Home
Upper Wellington St.
Built: 1942
Haunted: 1971
History
This two-story home, demolished in 1982, has a very interesting history.
During the demolition, the upper half of large double tombstone was discovered in the wall from which strange sounds had been heard.
The tombstone turned out to be that of a pair of infants (Martha Louisa Young 1888, Emma Grace Young 1879), who were buried in a nearby cemetary.
How or why the tombstone got there, and what connection it may have to events in the home, will likely remain forever unknown.
Hauntings
During the 1970s, the owners of the home reported several strange events. The apparition of a faceless spectre in a long black gown was seen hovering over the bed, only to dissappear before the lights could be turned on.
The apparition of a legless woman was also seen, complete with bulging eyes and hair standing on end.
During the 1982 demolition, the crew reported strange sounds coming from inside one of the walls. It was inside this wall that the tombstone was found.
